Zimmer sells $7.65B of senior notes for Biomet merger
The senior notes were sold in an underwritten public offering. The offer is expected to close on March 15, 2015. The merger is still expected to close in the first quarter of this year, or shortely therafter and is subject to regulatory approvals.

 

Dr. Sanjay Khurana helps rescue Harrison Ford from crashed air plane
Sanjay Khurana, MD, a spine surgeon at DISC Sports & Spine Center in Marina Del Rey, Calif., helped save actor Harrison Ford's life last week; not with a surgical procedure, but by pulling him from a crashed air plane. Dr. Khurana used his expertise to stabilize Mr. Ford and minimize damage at the scene while waiting for the emergency responders.


 
How SI joint fusion compares to non-surgical treatment
According to the study, published in International Journal of Spine Surgery, the patients who underwent fusion improved SI joint pain from 82.3 at baseline to 29.8 at six months on a zero to 100 scale. The patients who underwent non-surgical management reported a 12-point pain drop from 82.2 before surgery to 70.4 six months later.

LDR CEO Christophe Lavigne sold 38,400 shares of the company's stock. The stock was sold at an average price of $37.84, for a total value of $1.45 million.

 

The soft tissue repair market boom — Value expected to be $14.7B by 2019
The market is expected to reach $14.7 billion in 2019, up from $10.3 billion in 2014. It is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.5 percent from 2014 to 2019. Growth in this market is attributed to the increasing incidence of soft tissue injuries, increasing healthcare expenditure as well as lack of substitutes for soft tissue repair surgery.

 

Cervical Spine Research Society names Dr. Alan S. Hilibrand president
The Cervical Spine Research Society elected new leadership for 2014 to 2015, and the new  president is Alan S. Hilibrand, MD. He is the Joseph and Marie Field Professor of Spinal Surgery, vice chair of academic affairs and faculty development, co-chief of spinal surgery and director of orthopedic medical education at Jefferson Medical College/The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia.

 

CBO lowers PPACA cost projection
The Congressional Budget Office and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation updated their estimates of the budgetary effects of major Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provisions. The CBO and JCT project those provisions will cost the federal government $1.2 trillion from 2016 through 2025.
