Roderick Claybrooks, MD, a spine surgeon, authored a book to encourage black students with professional careers.

The book, titled "The Black Student's Guide to Success," covers several topics that encourage black students to look beyond sports and entertainment careers, stay in school and complete college.

"I meet too many young kids who don't realize that they have options," said Dr. Claybrooks. "I want kids to have faith in education."

Dr. Claybrooks is a board-certified spine surgeon based in Detroit. The book covers issues such as finding mentorship, dressing for success, choosing a career and building wealth. Dr. Claybrooks has also written the book "The Black Parent's Guide to Financial Success" and "The Black Student's Guide to Financial Success."

"An education, a good education, is the surest ticket out of the ghetto," said Dr. Claybrooks. "You have a much better chance of becoming a brain surgeon than becoming the next LeBron James."

Dr. Claybrooks earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. He underwent a spinal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.
