Market report: The minimally invasive spine market in 2015
A new report in Med Device Online shows fast growth in minimally invasive procedures among surgeons in a market that is expected to continue growth over the next few years. Combined, the minimally invasive and traditional spinal implant markets are expected to exceed $9 billion by 2020. Private insurers are expected to begin covering minimally invasive SI joint fusion procedures, which will further drive the market.

 

Northwestern Medicine launches orthopedic, spine center
Northwestern Medicine recently launched a 1 million-square-foot multidisciplinary outpatient center on the health system's downtown medical campus in Chicago. The center features a state-of-the-art imaging and operating room facilities, and is staffed by a diverse team of medical specialists.

 

Zimmer to expand operations in Ireland
Over the next five years, orthopedic device maker Zimmer plans to expand its operations in Ireland. The company will invest more than 51 million euro in the new manufacturing facility in Oranmore, Ireland.

 

K2M files follow-on offering registration statement
K2M hopes to raise around $40 million. The selling stockholders named in the registration statement expect to sell 4.9 million shares of common stock in the offering. This includes a 30-day option to purchase additional common stock shares that is expected to be granted to the underwriters.

 

Percutaneous laser disc decompression study shows similar outcomes to surgery
The researchers examined 57 patients randomly allocated to have PLDD and 58 patients who had conventional surgery. The researchers found that the primary outcome on the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire was not inferior for PLDD at eight weeks and 52 weeks after surgery.

 

Exactech acquires robotic tech company
Orthopedic device company Exactech acquired BlueOrtho, a Grenoble, France-based company focused on computer-assisted surgical technology development and manufacturing. Exactech will pay up to 10 million Euros and acquire 100 percent of the company's shares with 2 million Euros paid at the closing on Jan. 15, 2015.

 

1st U.S. surgery using FLXfit 3D expandable interbody cage
John Peloza, MD, of Plano-based Texas Back Institute, performed the first surgery in the United Stated with Expanding Orthopedics' FLXfit, the only 3D expandable interbody cage in the world. Dr. Peloza, a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon, focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery.


 
Dr. Mohammad Diab, patient create app to help spinal condition sufferers
Mohammad Diab, MD, and his longtime patient, Carol Tran, are working together to design an app that helps sufferers of scoliosis parse through some of the more difficult aspects of pre- and postoperation life. The app the pair are crafting includes a checklists on how to prepare for surgery.
