Noridian now covers MIS SI joint fusion
Medicare Administrative Contractor Noridian Healthcare Solutions now covers minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion surgery. The MAC began coverage on Jan. 1, 2015, the same day a new Category I CPT Code became available for the procedure.

 

Medtronic shareholders OK Covidien acquisition
Medtronic shareholders voted to approve the Covidien acquisition. Shareholders owning approximately 95.66 percent of the shares voted at the meeting. Covidien shareholders also approved the transaction.


 
Complex spine surgeries now MIS
A new report from MarketResearchReports shows that new innovation is expected in the minimally invasive spine surgery field and new surgical tools will make complicated surgeries easier and that the United States is the largest geographic market for spinal fusion. 

 

Globus Medical sales to exceed expectations
Globus Medical reported preliminary fourth quarter and full year results for 2014 ¬— fourth quarter sales were around $128.5 million, an 11.5 percent increase over the same period last year. Globus expects 2015 sales to reach around $510 million.

 

MiMedx subpoenaed for sales and marketing practices
The Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services issued a subpoena to MiMedx in connection with a civil investigation related to the company's sales and marketing activities. Around 18 months ago, the company identified a compliance policy violation and terminated that individual within 24 hours.


 
Mazor Robotics sells 6 systems, projects 4Q revenue at $5.7M
After the fourth quarter, the company has 83 Renaissance systems globally and 46 in the United States. This is up over 63 systems sold globally and 34 in the United States in 2013. The company expects to report $5.7 million in fourth quarter revenue when the final financial report is released in mid-January. 

 

New study addresses pediatric lumbar stenosis
An article published in Spinal Deformity discussed pediatric lumbar stenosis and evidence-based medical treatment. Lumbar spondylolysis can occur unilaterally or bilaterally. It is an acquired fracture of the pars interarticularis, according to the article.

 

AMA appoints Dr. Morgan Lorio CPT advisor
The American Medical Association appointed spine surgeon and spokesperson for the Spine Health Foundation Morgan Lorio, MD, as CPT advisor. In this position, Dr. Lorio will support the CPT Editorial Panel in its work as steward of the CPT code set.
