Dr. Barry Silverman to be honored with award for community service

A husband and wife pair will be honored for their altruism at the end of this month at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,-based Nova Southeastern University.

Philanthropists Judy and Barry Silverman, MD , will receive the President's Award for Excellence in Community Service by NSU President George L. Hanbury at the university's annual Celebration of Excellence event.

 

Dr. Silverman, a retired orthopedic surgeon, began his career in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Since then, he has been instrumental in the creation of a scoliosis screening program for public schools in Miami-Dade County, Fla. Dr. Silverman has also served as chair to the Easter Seals of South Florida and founded Camp Yofi, a camp for children with autism. Dr. Silverman belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Dade County Medical Association, and Florida Medical Association. His work has earned awards from Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Easter Seals Florida. Ms. Silverman serves as a trained volunteer for the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center of South Florida, which conducts interviews of Holocaust survivors in order to preserve their stories for future generations. Some of Ms. Silverman's interviews have been archived at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

 

Now in its 18th year, NSU's President's Award for Excellent in Community Service Award honors professional engagement activities by members of the South Florida community. The Celebration of Excellence signature event will be held on NSU's main campus in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 31.
