Michael Wang, MD, a Miami-based spine surgeon, performed a procedure on San Francisco Giants infielder Marco Scutaro, according to an ESPN report.

Here are five quick facts about the procedure:

 

1. The spinal fusion was performed at L2-L3 to alleviate back pain.

 

2. Mr. Scutaro will spend four to six months recovering from the surgery before he’ll work with physicians to decide whether he’ll be able to return to play.

 

3. Mr. Scutaro reported recurring back pain last season and only played five games before going on the disabled list.

 

4. Regardless of whether he returns to play, the spinal fusion was designed to improve his quality of life off the field as well, according to the report.

 

5. Mr. Scutaro is now resting at home. He is the former National League Championship Series MVP in 2012.
