Alvin Crawford, MD, renowned pediatric spine surgeon, received the 2015 Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Business Courier.

Here are 10 things to know about Dr. Crawford:

 

1. He is the retired director of the Crawford Spine Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

 

2. Dr. Crawford joined Cincinnati Children's in 1977 as director of orthopedic surgery.

 

3. When he stepped down as chief after 29 years, he was awarded endowed chairs in pediatric orthopedics and spine surgery, according to the report.

 

4. He is the only surgeon named a Top 10 Educator in the first 100 years at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

 

5. Dr. Crawford was the first African-American president of the Scoliosis Research Society.

 

6. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine gave him the Daniel Drake award in 2006.

 

7. The Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber named Dr. Crawford a Great Living Cincinnatian earlier this year.

 

8. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored six books.

 

9. Throughout his career, Dr. Crawford trained 54 fellows.

 

10. He has lectured or performed surgery in 41 countries.
