Scott Falci, MD, chief neurosurgical consultant for Craig Hospital, and George Frey, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon and founder of Colorado Comprehensive Spine Institute, adapted a 1997 Corvette C5 that could be driven by a paraplegic, according to a 9 News report.
The car was developed in partnership with Adaptive Motors co-founder Matt Autterson. The controls are within arm's reach and acceleration occurs from squeezing a ring directly behind the wheel. The car also includes a hand break and gearshift with infrared sensor to engage the clutch when grasped, according to the report.
The car was recently driven for its inaugural run by paralyzed former racer Mike Bauer.
