Preoperative cigarette smoking is not a predictor of poor perioperative outcomes for spinal surgery, according to a study in the July 1 issue of Spine.
Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland analyzed data from 14,500 patients in the National Surgical Quality Improvement population. They classified individuals as prior, current and never smokers before comparing 30 day surgical outcomes among the three groups.
After conducting analyses they did not find significant differences among populations for 30-day surgical outcomes.
