Researchers Find Mortality Rate for Spine Surgery

Spine

Researchers have calculated the mortality rate for spine surgery patients at 1.8 deaths per 1,000 patients, according to a study published in Spine. For the study, researchers relied on data from the Scoliosis Research Society Morbidity and Mortality database to calculate death from spine surgery cases from 2004 to 2007. They ultimately determined 197 deaths from 108,419 spine surgery cases, translating to a 1.8 mortality rate. This rate changes based on age and primary diagnosis.

The researchers also determined the most common causes for mortality in spine surgery cases, including respiratory/pulmonary causes, cardiac causes, sepsis, stroke and intraoperative blood loss.
