Walmart to Offer Employees Free Spine Services at 6 Health Organizations

Spine

Through a bundled payment agreement, Walmart employees will have access to free spine procedures at certain health systems and hospitals with no out-of-pocket cost, according to a news release published in Bloomberg Businessweek. Under this program, six designated healthcare organizations will provide certain cardiac and spine procedures to Walmart associates at 100 percent coverage. The six healthcare organizations include:

• Cleveland Clinic
• Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
• Mayo Clinic sites in Rochester, Minn., Scottsdale/Phoenix and Jacksonville, Fla.
• Mercy Hospital Springfield (Mo.)
• Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas
• Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle

Walmart chose these organizations based on their quality of care in heart and spine procedures, according to the release.

Cleveland Clinic, Geisinger Medical Center, Scott & White Memorial Hospital and Virginia Mason Medical Center will provide open heart surgery for coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve replacement/repair, closures of heart defects, thoracic and aortic aneurysm repair and other complex cardiac surgeries.

Mercy Hospital Springfield, Scott & White Memorial Hospital and Virginia Mason Medical Center will perform cervical and lumbar spinal fusion, total disk arthroplasty, spine surgery revisions and other complex spine surgeries.

Walmart and the healthcare organizations developed a bundled pricing arrangement for these procedures such that Walmart's associates and their dependents who are enrolled in the company's medical plans can receive consultations and care covered at 100 percent without deductible or coinsurance, plus travel, lodging and food for the patient and a caregiver, according to the release.

Walmart began the Centers of Excellence program in 1996 to offer Walmart associates full coverage of transplants at Mayo Clinic facilities. Mayo Clinic will continue to provide transplants.
