ISASS' Dr. Steven Garfin Responds to Supreme Court's Healthcare Ruling

Spine

Steven Garfin, MD, president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, recently released a statement on the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In the statement, Dr. Garfin says ISASS remains committed to ensuring the PPACA is implemented in ways that guarantee patients' access to "medically indicated and appropriate spine surgeries and procedures." ISASS will also push to replace the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate with a more sustainable physician reimbursement model, according to the statement.

ISASS will continue to monitor provisions that could threaten patient access to care and appropriate surgeon reimbursement, Dr. Garfin said, including the "seemingly unchecked authority of the Independent Payment Advisory Board to unilaterally reduce expenditures and reimbursements."

Further, Dr. Garfin addresses the research funding called for in the PPACA to compare the effectiveness of various drugs and treatments.

"We will be vigilant to ensure that the findings of such research inform clinical decision-making rather than dictate that 'least costly alternatives' be required of surgeons and patients," he said in the statement.
