Spine surgeon Ramon Mabasa, MD, and New Milford Hospital, have reached a $5.25 million settlement in a malpractice lawsuit brought by a former patient who had her leg amputated after experiencing complications associated with her spine surgery, according to a News Times report.
The patient was treated with the anterior transabdominal approach to the lumbosacral spine and spent time in the intensive care unit after her 2005 surgery failed. Dr. Mabasa, a general surgeon, was chief of surgery at the time he performed the patient's elective spine surgery and is now retired.
During the post-operative recovery, the patient experienced intra-abdominal hemorrhaging, post-operative bleeding, abdominal wounds and other complications, according to the suit. The patient also claimed that she was unaware that Dr. Mabasa would be involved in her surgery until right before the surgery occurred, so she was unable to check his credentials.
