The statement addresses some payers' policy considering spine cages not medically necessary for cervical fusion and summarizes spine surgeon purview on the evolution of cervical interbody fusion.

 

AANS' NREF awards post-residency clinical fellowship grants to 9 organizations
The Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation, an affiliate of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons announced the recipients of its post-residency, clinical fellowship grant program for the 2014 to 2015 academic year. The foundation reached agreements with DePuy Synthes Spine and Medtronic, both of which will provide funding in support of the grant program.

 

Spine gives Dr. Marinko Rade the 2014 Young Investigator Award
Dr. Rade is the Prim. Dr. Martin Horvat Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Croatia. He was recognized for a paper titled "In Vivo Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measurement of Spinal Cord Displacement in the Thoracolumbar Region of Asymptomatic Subjections: Part 1: Straight Leg Raise Test" as well as "Part 2: Comparison Between Unilateral and Bilateral Straight Leg Raise Tests."

 

Smith & Nephew CEO: mega-merger unlikely
Smith & Nephew CEO Olivier Bohuon is now publicly allaying rumors the company may consider a merger or sale to another medtech giant in the near future, according to a report from The Telegraph. He also criticized the recent bout of mega-mergers as defensive rather than offensive.

 

Global medical robots market to reach $3.7B by 2018
The market was valued at $1.7 billion in 2013 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 16.1 percent from 2013 to 2018.

 

NuVasive announced 2Q results
The company reported total revenue in the second quarter of 2014 increased 15.1 percent to $190.7 million, making it the third-largest company in the global spine market. The company's cervical spine performance in the United States was below expectations, however, dropping 1 percent.

 

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine appoints Dr. Robert Masson to work group
The Scientific and Medical Research Funding Work Group makes recommendations to the Institute's 29-member governing body with respect to research grants funded by the Institute. Robert L. Masson, MD, is the founder of the NeuroSpine Institute in Orlando.

 

IOM calls for overhaul of GME financing
In a newly released report, the Institute of Medicine urges the government to significantly reform the system for funding graduate medical education to address deficiencies and better shape the physician workforce for the future.
