University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine has been awarded $6 million by CMS' Innovation Center for its Better Back Care program.
The Better Back Care program will create a medical neighborhood linking approximately 60 primary care providers with the UNC spine program, an existing team of 10 specialty providers. The neighborhood will adopt evidence-based, coordinated care practices for patients with low back pain.
The grant is part of the second round of CMS' Health Care Innovation Awards. UNC's school of medicine is one of 39 awardees nationally. The awards are given to applicants who create the most compelling new programs to deliver better health, improved care and lower costs. The program will be directed by Brian Casazza, MD, director of the UNC Hospitals Spine Center and Amy Shaheen, MD, an associate professor in the UNC School of Medicine.
