Global Spine Outreach’s Life-Saving Work

In a presentation during Becker’s ASC Review’s 12th Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference + the Future of Spine, June 14 in Chicago, Anthony Rinella, MD, discussed his work with Global Spine Outreach.

Global Spine Outreach is an American nonprofit that sends spine surgeons to developing nations to perform life-changing, and often life-saving, spinal procedures and educate local physicians on spine surgery best practices.

GSO surgeons treat patients with severe scoliosis, Morquio syndrome, spina bifida and other debilitating disorders, many of which are small children. Operating on patients with these conditions “is one of the most challenging things you can do to the human body,” said Dr. Rinella. “And it’s terrifying to think of little kids having surgery at that age… but I can’t let these kids die.”

Dr. Rinella recently completed his 25th trip to Columbia. The video below gives an introduction to the GSO’s work, and shows the dramatic difference Dr. Rinella and the other GSO surgeons are able to make in their patients’ lives.
