FDA Grants Approval to Human Stem Cell Trial for Spinal Cord Injury Treatment

Newark, N.J.-based StemCells, a biotech company, recently received FDA permission to begin testing an experimental stem cell therapy in humans with spinal cord injuries, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report. The company has already been testing neural stem cells on human subjects in Switzerland. The recent approval will allow StemCells to conduct a trial in the U.S. and Canada aimed at showing how stem cells can improve or reverse effects of spinal cord paralysis.

Many scientists hope this approval will allow for more research gains to be made in the U.S. surrounding stem cells for regenerative medicine.
