Here are seven things for spine surgeons to know for Thursday, May 30, 2013. U.S. spine market now worth $5.5B with $1.5B from minimally invasive devices.
The spinal implant market in the U.S. is now worth more than $5.5 billion, $1.5 billion of which is made up of minimally invasive spine implants. Medtronic is the current market leader in both MIS and total spine implants with its devices for thoracolumbar and cervical fixation; interbody fusion; and minimally invasive interbody fusion and pedicle screws.

Dr. Yi Li of Henry Ford Hospital led a study of spinal cord regeneration.
Yi Li, MD, a neurologist of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, led a study providing evidence that regeneration of spinal cord fibers could lead to functional recovery in stroke victims. The study concluded that while early improvement in stroke victims can be the result of spontaneous repairs and reduced brain swelling, later progression occurs due to the regeneration of spinal cord nerve cells.

K2M internationally launches spinal device for small stature patients.
Leesburg, Va.-based K2M launched its MESA small stature spinal system for Australian, New Zealand and European markets. The system features a 4.5 mm pedicle screw, a low profile alternative for use on small stature spines.

North American Clinical Trials Network received $2M DoD grant.
The Department of Defense awarded the North American Clinical Trials Network of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation a $2 million grant for research on the treatment of spinal cord injuries. The funding will support Phase 2 and 3 trials of the drug Riluzole, an FDA-approved neuroprotective drug. Riluzole is designed to limit spinal cord damage.

NASS advocacy documentary called for more spine specialist involvement.
The North American Spine Society released a short documentary with a "behind-the-scenes" look at advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill. The documentary covers NASS Fly-ins for members across the country to meet with their representatives and features several congressional representatives discussing the importance of political participation for spine surgeons and specialists.

Renaissance spine system sales boost Mazor Q1 profits nearly 110%.
Mazor Robotics' gross profit for the first quarter more than doubled from $1.9 million in 2012 to $4 million in the three month period ending March 31. The increase is due to double the demand for Mazor's Renaissance spine system — six units sold in the first quarter of 2013 compared to three units in 2012.
