Here are seven things for spine surgeons to know for Thursday, May 9, 2013. Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia performed scoliosis surgery with new technology.
On May 7, Behrooz Akbarnia, MD, led a team of surgeons at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego in performing two pediatric surgeries with Ellipse Technologies' MAGnetic Expansion Control System. The MAGEC System, comprised of implantable adjustable growing rods, is designed to treat early-onset scoliosis.

Medtronic Spine will cut 230 jobs.
Medtronic plans to eliminate 230 jobs from its Memphis, Tenn.-based spine division. The spine layoffs are part of a plan to reduce overall costs by 5 percent.

Aurora Spine named Dr. Neville Alleyne to scientific advisory board.
Carlsbad, Calif.-based Aurora Spine appointed Neville Alleyne, MD, to its scientific advisory board. Dr. Alleyne is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who founded and served as chief medical director for start-up spinal device companies, including ProSpine, NAS Medical and Smartdisc.

Dr. Robert Watkins performed spine surgery on Chivas USA goalkeeper.
On May 2, Robert Watkins, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and co-director Marina Spine Clinic in Marina del Rey, Calif., performed a successful microscopic lumbar discectomy on Chivas USA goalkeeper Tim Melia. The procedure was performed at Marina del Rey Hospital.

X-Spine's Zygafix fusion, joint stabilization device approved by FDA.
Miamisburg, Ohio-based X-Spine received FDA clearance for its Zygafix Facet Fusion System for fusion and stabilization of the facet joint. The Zygafix joins the company's AXLE and SILEX systems as novel devices for spinal fusions.

NuVasive purchased ANC spine implant manufacturer for $4.5M.
San Diego-based NuVasive acquired ANC, a spine implant manufacturer based in Dayton, Ohio. NuVasive will pay approximately $4.5 million for the company, which NuVasive has been involved with since 2010 as a manufacturing partner. All 65 ANC employees will be retained.

AANS names Dr. Gary Bloomgarden its vice president.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons named board-certified neurosurgeon Gary Bloomgarden, MD, FAANS, FACS, as its vice president.
Dr. Bloomgarden has previously served on the AANS Board of Directors.
