Study: Spinal Manipulation Not Effective for Acute Lower Back Pain

Spine

A recent review in The Cochrane Library found no evidence suggests manipulating the spine treats acute lower back pain more effectively than other therapy options, according to Health Behavior News Service. The researchers studies 20 controlled trials of 2,674 patients with lower back pain and concluded spinal manipulation neither reduced pain nor sped recovery faster than exercise, pain medications or physiotherapy.

The study also showed spinal manipulation was no more effective than therapies known to be ineffective, such as ultrasound or heat therapy.
