Expandable Magnetic Growing Rod Being Used to Treat Progressive Early-Onset Scoliosis

Spine

Two young patients with progressive early-onset scoliosis were among the first in North America to be offered treatment with an expandable magnetic rod, according an article in the August issue of AORN Journal. Once implanted, a patient's family or caregiver expands the magnetic growing rod non-surgically by manipulating it with an external magnet, following a set schedule designed to maintain correction as the child grows. The expandable rod helps patients maintain flexibility while correcting spinal curvatures.

Known as the Phoenix Rod, the device has been used for seven years in Europe and Australia. It was used at Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Ore. — the hospital received FDA approval to use the device in November 2011, becoming the first facility in North America to do so, according to a news release.
