Here are 13 spine surgeons who were recently in the spotlight for surgeries they performed, research presented or other honors and achievements.
The physicians of Sea Spine Orthopedic Institute opened a new location in Tampa, Fla., which is their fourth location. The practice was founded by Andrew Joshua Appel, MD, a fellowship trained orthopedic trauma and spine surgeon.

Spine surgeon Gerard Girasole, MD, of Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Trumbull, Conn., has co-authored a book about back pain called "The 7-Minute Back Pain Solution."

Ziya Gokaslan, MD, recently performed spine surgery on Boston Orioles pitcher Nolan Reimold for a bulging disc in the cervical spine. The procedure was performed at the Johns Hopkins Neurological Spine Center, where Dr. Gokaslan is the director.

Surgeons at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, recently reported on having a high rate of accuracy and success in placing pedicle screws in pediatric patients to correct scoliosis. The surgeons presented a study showing more than 90 percent accuracy rate placing the screws and nearly 100 percent success rate in correcting scoliosis in pediatric patients.

Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City recently honored former chief of spine service Patrick F. O'Leary with the lifetime achievement award. He has practiced spine surgery for more than 35 years and established the biomechanics fellowship at HSS in 1991.

Neurosurgeon Stephen Onesti, MD, director of neurosurgery for South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y., was appointed to the Nassau County Medical Society Board of Directors.

Anthony Rinella, MD, will receive the Scoliosis Research Society's Humanitarian Award for his work with SpineHope, a non-profit organization he co-founded for global outreach to underserved pediatric populations.

Rockford (Ill.) Spine Center co-founder Michael Roh, MD, recently spoke about modern spine surgery techniques at the annual OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. He discussed techniques for reducing post-operative infections, minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal disc replacement and spinal deformity correction.

Memorial Spine at Memorial University Medical Center, led by physician champions Raphael Roybal, MD, and James Lindley, MD, recently received UnitedHealth Premium Surgical Spine Specialty Center designation for quality care.

Thomas C. Schuler, MD
, and Christopher R. Good, MD, of Virginia Spine Institute in Reston recently performed robotic-guided spine surgery during a thoracic fusion procedure to repair a spinal fracture. They used Mazor Robotics' Renaissance robotic system.

Robert Watkins, MD, performed microdiscectomy on San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez. Dr. Watkins is the co-director of the Marina Spine Center in Marina del Rey, Calif.
