These 25 spine devices received the 2015 Becker's Healthcare Spine Device Award.

ALTERA Minimally Invasive Articulating Expandable Spacer from Globus Medical. The ALTERA spacer is the first minimally invasive fully articulating expandable spacer for spinal fusion designed for restoring lordosis and maintaining sagittal balance. The spacer is inserted at a minimized height, articulated into an anterior position and then expanded vertically to optimize fit.

 

ARC Pedicle Screw System from NLT. The pedicle screw system includes the ARC percutaneous pedicle screw and the reusable instruments. The screws are designed for percutaneous insertion and made of titanium alloy. There are bendable tips on the screws that increase the pullout strength and its intended for posterior fixation in the thoracolumbar spine.

 

Aspen MIS Fusion System from Biomet. The Aspen MIS Fusion System includes a family of spinous process fixation devices designed for rigid posterior fixation for T1 to S1 fusion. The system is a simple midline approach to minimize muscle and soft disruption. The central barrel design provides load-sharing support and bone graft containment to facilitate fusion.

 

Brainlab—Spinal Navigation Application from Brainlab. The Spinal Navigation is designed to deliver more accurate pedicle screw placement and reduce X-ray exposure. Navigation is possible in two-dimensional images, three-dimensional scans and MR or CT datasets in all stages of surgery. The technology is indicated for use in any spine area placement, complex deformity correction, tumor surgery and surgical planning.

Chesapeake from K2M. The Chesapeake Anterior-Lumbar Stabilization System is a multi-screw construct designed for anterior column stability. The technology reduces the need for supplemental fixation in the lumbar spine and includes the tifix Locking technology. The implant is manufactured from Biocompatible PEEK Polymer and is an anterior fixation with a zero-profile design.

CONFORM SHEET from DePuy Synthes Spine. The CONFORM SHEET is a 100 percent demineralized cancellous bone with a pliable shape memory. Paired with Q-PACK, the CONFORM SHEET is designed for use in the posterolateral gutters and for filling bone voids. The CONFORM SHEET readily absorbs and retains bone marrow aspirate, blood or saline and is osteogenic when combined with bone marrow aspirate.

 

Dynamic Surgical Guidance Technology from SpineGuard. The Dynamic Surgical Guidance technology is integrated with pedicle screws to optimize workflow and accuracy. The technology is also designed to reduce radiation exposure for surgeons in traditional and minimally invasive surgical settings and provides feedback and confidence in the ultimate fixation of the screw. The company recently partnered with Zavation to integrate the DSG technology into Zavation's pedicle screw.

 

Waveguide XT System from Invuity. The Waveguide is powered by Photonics Technology to deliver direct intra-cavity illumination and visualization during minimal-access surgery. The system integrates seamlessly with any surgical approach, technique or instrumentation and is compatible with existing retractors and instrumentation. The device anchors to the incision wall providing a standalone, hands-free device.

 

Endoskeleton TL from Titan Spine. The Endoskeleton TL is a lateral fusion device that features the company's proprietary surface technology that has been shown to encourage the production of bone growth factors necessary for fusion. It contains a proximal/inserter window allowing for post-implantation bone graft packing. The device is indicated for degenerative disc disease and includes a smooth and tapered leading edge for easy insertion to maximize surface technology. The Endoskeleton device is under warranty, a new program from the company that will provide a one-time free replacement if revision is necessary due to non-union within the warranty period for any reason other than physician error or patient follow-up failure.

 

Implanet Spine System from Implanet. The Implanet Spine System is designed for immobilization and stabilization for patients as an adjunct to fusion in the thoracic, lumbar and/or sacral spine. They are individually packed sterile implants and have a low-profile design based on 5.5 mm diameter rods. There is a wide range of pre-bent and straight Ti alloy rods.

InQu from ISTO Technologies. The InQu bone graft extender and substitute is designed to create a natural microenvironment that supports new bone formation in spinal fusions and orthopedic procedures. The biosynthetic technology doesn't contain any human or animal cell or tissue; instead InQu combines hyaluronic acid into the scaffolding network formed by resorbable PLGA. Surgeons can distinguish new bone growth on the X-ray.

 

Longbow from Life Spine. Longbow Expandable Lateral Spacer System is the first interbody on the market that expands laterally in-situ designed specifically for a direct lateral approach. The device could reduce the amount of retraction by as much as 45 percent compared to other lateral systems. Additionally, the device's radiopaque tantalum markers improve intraoperative visualization.

 

Luna 360 from Benvenue Medical. The Luna 360 is a minimally invasive lumbar interbody fusion device for patients with degenerative disc disease that has an expandable implant to restore height with the posterior approach while maintaining stable fixation. The system is expanded after being placed within the disc space and reduces the need to insert a larger spacer into the collapsed space. It's designed for a linear, elongated insertion to minimize retraction and protect neural structures.

 

Magnifuse II from Medtronic. This technology allows physicians to assemble the bone graft and combines demineralized allograft bone with recovered autograft bone. The material is then placed in bone voids, and the ability to add autograft to the resorbable mesh gives Magnifuse an edge.

 

MySpine from Medacta. The MySpine Patient-Matched Technology uses three-dimensional reconstruction and rapid three-dimensional printing technology to create patient-specific guides. The technology is used during complicated spinal deformity repairs. The MySpine technology is designed to increase efficiency and accuracy with the guides helping identify optimal screw trajectories and entry points into specific vertebrae.

nanOss Bioactive 3D from RTI Surgical. The nanOss Bioactive 3D is the next-generation device to plane graft into bony defects for a wide range of extremity and trauma procedures. The bone graft includes a semi-rigid three-dimensional scaffold consists of porous hydroxyapatite granules suspended within a porous gelatin-based foam matrix. The solution is designed to support the natural bone formation process.

Neuro-Spinal Scaffold from InVivo. The Neuro-Spinal Scaffold is designed for spinal cord injury patients. It is an investigational bioresorbable polymer scaffold implanted within the spinal cord contusion to provide structural support for spared spinal tissue. The supportive matrix facilitates endogenous repair processes that degrades over several weeks. The Neuro-Spinal Scaffold is intended to mitigate tissue damage from critical pathophysiological events occurred during the acute SCI phase.

 

Picasso II from AccelSPINE. The Picasso II MIS Spinal System is a second-generation fixation system. The system is an integrated percutaneous reduction tower with a single-step locking set screw for efficient implant installation. The system uses an ACME Thread Locking Set Screw to eliminate cross-threading during set screw tightening. There are color-coded polyaxial screws with integrated percutaneous reduction tower and locking set screws.

Precision Spectra Spinal Cord Stimulator System from Boston Scientific. The Precision Spectra Spinal Cord Stimulator System is designed for additional coverage, flexibility and control when delivering spinal cord stimulation. It was the first system with Illumina three-dimensional software and 32 contacts designed for pain relief.

 

ROI-A from LDR. The ROI-A is a system designed for zero-profile, standalone anterior lumbar interbody fusion. The ROI-ALIF cage includes a large central graft space and accommodates the self-guided, self-locking VerteBRIDGE plating designed for stability without instrumentation protruding anterior of vertebral bodies. The surgery can treat patients with less exposure than other standalone systems inserted at oblique angles.

 

S4 Element MIS from Aesculap. The S4 Element MIS System is a posterior lumbar pedicle screw fixation system using the endoscope technology for direct visualization. The system also includes a rescue technique and instrumentation designed to minimize risk for open conversion during MIS surgery. The system was also constructed with optimizing the operating room workflow in mind.

 

UNiD rod from Medicrea. The UNiD rod is a patient-specific spinal osteosynthesis rod that premiered at the 2014 North American Spine Society annual meeting. The UNiD technology includes user-friendly software to help surgeons preoperatively plan their surgery and order customized, industrially-produced rods to fit the specific spinal alignment for each patient.

Virage OCT Spinal Fixation System from Zimmer Spine. The Virage System includes the 360 degree Omnidirecional Extreme-Angle Screw technology that allows for 112 degrees of conical range of motion that simplifies rod alignment. The system also has low profile occipital plates available in three sizes.

XLIF Corpectomy from NuVasive. The eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion Corpectomy is a minimally invasive technique for treating tumors and trauma patients. The procedure is designed for a lower operative time, less blood loss, reduced hospital stay and a smaller incision.

ZIP ULTRA MIS from Aurora Spine. The ZIP ULTRA is a minimally invasive interspinous fixation implant for spinal fusion. It's designed for stabilization and load sharing in T1-S1 thoracolumbar fusion procedures as an adjunct to interbody fusion in treating degeneration, spondylolisthesis, trauma and/or tumor. The articular spike design increases the potential for anatomical conformity with 12 degrees of articulation.
