Here are 20 new minimally invasive devices in 2016. These devices were launched, released, introduced or had their first use in the United States in the first half of this year.

The medical technology business of ZEISS offers a comprehensive line of surgical microscopes and loupes that uncompromisingly enhance visualization during spine surgery. ZEISS supports spine surgeons in seeing more by ensuring optical precision, flexibility, fast OR setup and ease of use for surgeon, assistant, and OR staff.

 

Amendia launched the Ceres-C Stand-Alone Cervical Interbody device, a low-profile PEEK interbody spacer combined with a titanium plate and screws designed for anterior cervical interbody fusion. The system is designed to minimize steps and save OR time.

 

Camber Spine Technologies launched the PROLIX SI Fusion System for minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion. The system is used in conjunction with lateral screws with the potential to decrease revision procedures.

 

Camber Spine also launched the ORTHROS MIS Posterior Stabilization System, the latest addition of the ORTHROS brand pedicle screws with the MIS version, including breakaway screw head extensions to facilitate the MIS technique.

 

Centinel Spine completed the alpha release of the STALIF L No-Profile lateral lumbar integrated interbody device with a large chamber for bone graft to support fusion as well as a variety of cage sizes to match patient anatomy.

 

Interventional Spine launched new products as part of the Opticage Lumbar Fusion line for minimally invasive spine surgery. The new features include the OptiGraft Inserter, lateral and TLIF designs for parallel and lordotic applications and significant graft window size. The additional features also include the ability to fill Opticage with additional flowable graft material post expansion in situ.

 

Exactech launched the Acapella One Cervical Spacer System, an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion device with integrated anchors that features PEEK-Optima and includes a single-step implantation with integrated locking mechanism.

 

K2M expanded its minimally invasive spine portfolio in January with the CASCADIA Lateral Interbody System featuring the Lamellar Titanium Technology, proprietary technology that uses 3D printing for bony integration throughout an implant. The implants begin as titanium powder and grow through selective application of a high-energy laser beam to incorporate both porosity and surface roughness.

 

Mazor Robotics released Mazor X which includes preoperative analytics, intra-operative guidance and real-time 3D verification for robotic-guided spine surgery. The system was co-developed with Medtronic.

 

MedTech launched the ROSA Spine Surgical Robotic Platform in the United States in March. The ROSA Spine system is for minimally invasive spine surgery and aids in decisive stages of planning, instrument navigation and positioning implants in the patient’s vertebrae.

 

Medtronic launched the revamped OLIF Platform with the Pivox Oblique Lateral Spinal System with Lateral Plate for OLIF25 and Divergence-L Anterior/Oblique Lumbar System for OLIF51.

 

NuVasive launched its next generation biologics technology AttraX Putty, a synthetic bone graft product indicated for use as an autograft extender in posterolateral spine surgery.

 

Pinnacle Spine Group launched the InFill Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion device to maximize wall thickness and graft chamber volume for optimal contact with the vertebral endplates by the interbody device and bone graft material. Surgeons can deliver optimal volume of graft material to implant in situ without disrupting the interbody device placement.

 

SeaSpine introduced the Hollywood VI NanoMetalene Interbody Device indicated for spinal fusion procedures at one or two levels for transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. The NanoMetalene is a sub-microbial layer of commercially pure titanium molecularly bonded to PEEK-OPTIMA from Invibio.

 

Spinal Simplicity introduced a new generation of their Minuteman G3 fusion device featuring a hydroxyapatite coating. The company has an integrated sterile packed implant offering which can save time and money over sterile pack processing. The HA coating is FDA-cleared.

 

Spine Wave launched the Velocity L Expandable Device designed to minimize forceful impaction of large lateral implants into collapsed disc spaces by offering a low-profile insertion height with subsequent controlled expansion to the desired disc space height.

 

SpineGuard commercially launched its new PediGuard Threaded device in May. The device is a three-in-one instrument to optimize insertion, positioning and anchorage of screws in the vertebra without fluoroscopy.

 

Spineology released the Elite expandable interbody fusion system designed for implantation at a minimal height and expandable after final positioning in the disc space. The device enabled the surgeon to minimize neural retraction and potentially restore anatomical alignment of the spine.

 

Verta Spine developed the COHERE Cervical Interbody Fusion System that had its first implantation in June. The technology is Verta’s first device with the patented porous PEEK Scoria biomaterial technology. It is the first device manufactured entirely out of PEEK in clinical use.

 

VTI launched the InterLink Pedicle Screw System for minimally invasive spine surgery that includes 22 polyaxial pedicle screws, 19 spinal rods, connectors and set screws for single-or multiple-level fixation.

 

Wenzel Spine made the VariLift-LX System commercially available throughout the United States in April. The system is the next generation to Wenzel’s Expandable Stand-Alone interbody fusion device. It has a zero-profile system for additional options during lumbar fusion.
