Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Thomas Schuler of Virginia Spine Institute

Founder of Virginia Spine Institute, Thomas Schuler, MD, performed the first hybrid multi-level cervical artificial disc replacement with spinal fusion. Dr. Schuler was named among the top 1 percent of physicians in his specialty by U.S News & World Report.

He is board certified by both the American Board of Spine Surgery and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as president of the Spinal Research Foundation. A fellow of the American College of Spine Surgery, he is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of North American Spine Society, among other organizations.

 

Specializing in cervical and lumbar spine disorders, Dr. Schuler researches regenerative therapy and the use of stem cells in spinal surgery.

 

After earning his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Dr. Schuler completed an orthopedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak (Mich.). He then completed a spinal surgery fellowship at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
