Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Paul Rubery of University of Rochester Medical Center

Paul T. Rubery, MD, is chief of the division of spine surgery at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center. He was recently named chair of the department of orthopedics, but the appointment is still pending the University Board of Trustees approval. He is also director of the Louis A. Goldstein Fellowship in spinal surgery. He heads the URMC Spine Center, where almost 25,000 patients receive care annually.

Dr. Rubery's clinical interests include scoliosis, complex spinal reconstruction, minimally invasive spine surgery and tumors and trauma of the spine. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

 

Dr. Rubery's research interests center on the use of gene transfer to improve cartilage repair, ligament healing and the restoration of various additional tissues, including the tendon and meniscus. His work has been published in prestigious journals, including Spine and Journal of Biomechanics.

 

Dr. Rubery earned his medical degree at Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He has also completed a fellowship in spine surgery at URMC with Richard Burton, MD.
