Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Allen Levi of University of Miami Health System

Allen D. Levi, MD is the chief of neurosurgery at the University of Miami Hospital, as well as chief of neurospine services and spine fellowship director at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and Joint Section of Spine and Peripheral Nerve Disorders. He is board-certified in both Canada and the United States.

Dr. Levi's practice focuses on spinal surgery for trauma, degenerative disc disease, neoplasm, rheumatoid arthritis, complex spinal instrumentation and peripheral nerve surgery. His research interests include spinal cord injury, minimally invasive spine surgery, artificial cervical disc, Schwann cells, hypothermia and clinical outcomes research. He oversees several ongoing clinical trials.

 

Dr. Levi has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications to his name and more than 25 textbook chapters. He serves as a reviewer for several journals, including The Journal of Spine, Neurosurgical Focus and Journal of Neurotrauma. He has won a number of awards, such as the Mayfield Award-Basic Science from the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerve.

 

Dr. Levi earned his medical degree at the University of Ottawa in Canada and completed his residency at the University of Toronto, also in Canada. He has completed a PhD in neuroscience at University of Miami School of Medicine and a spine fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
