Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Wellington Hsu of Northwestern Medicine

Wellington Hsu, MD, is the Clifford C. Raisbeck Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Chicago-based Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the director of the Professional Athlete's Spine Initiative at Northwestern Medicine, which collects outcomes data on athletes who undergo treatment for spinal conditions. He is a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Hsu's clinical interests include degenerative spine surgery, cervical spine surgery, spine trauma/spinal cord injury, spine tumors and spine infections. He heads the Laboratory for Regenerative Technologies of the department of orthopedic surgery at Northwestern. His research interests include regenerative technologies as bone graft substitutes for spine fusion.

 

Dr. Hsu serves as a consultant for a number of medical device companies, such as Globus Medical, Stryker and Medtronic. He also serves as a spinal consultant for Chicago Cubs and the National Football League. Dr. Hsu's work has been published in a number of professional journals such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Seminars in Spine Surgery.

 

Dr. Hsu earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn. He completed his residency at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and fellowship training at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
