Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Joseph Ciacci of UC San Diego Health System

Joseph Ciacci, MD, is a professor of clinical neurosurgery and serves as the neurosurgery residency program director at University of California San Diego Health System. He also serves as chief of neurosurgery at VA San Diego Healthcare System. In addition, he leads clinics at UCSD Moores Cancer Center and UC San Diego Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

Dr. Ciacci has a professional interest in complex spinal reconstruction, stereotactic radiosurgery and tumors of the spine and brain. He was on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore for nine years before joining the UC San Diego Health System. He has been a visiting professor and has given lectures throughout the United States and internationally.

Dr. Ciacci earned his medical degree at State University of New York at Buffalo and completed his residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He has completed a fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Additionally, he has completed neuro-oncology fellowships at University of California Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health.
