Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Jonathan Slotkin of Geisinger

Jonathan Slotkin, MD, is director of spinal surgery and spinal cord injury research at Geisinger Neurosciences Institute in Danville, Pa. He is on the scientific advisory board for InVivo Therapeutics, a medical device company focused on spinal cord injury solutions.

Dr. Slotkin's clinical interests include back and neck pain, complex spinal surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery, spine tumor surgery, sports-related spine and neurological injury. He has a wide-array of research interests, centering on regeneration and plasticity after spinal cord injury, as well as nanotechnology initiatives for neurological disorders.

 

Dr. Slotkin is the co-editor of a two-volume publication on spinal surgery, and he has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications in the areas of repair after spinal cord injury in animal models. His research work has won the Apfelbaum award presented by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

 

Dr. Slotkin earned his medical degree at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed his residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital, also in Boston.
