Spine surgeon profile: Dr. Richard Lee of Hoag Orthopedic Institute

Richard Lee, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon providing care at Newport Beach, Calif.-based Newport Orthopedic Institute and Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute. He is board-certified.

Dr. Lee focuses on minimally invasive surgery of the spine, and he treats a wide array of spinal conditions including cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine pathologies. While earning his undergraduate degree, he focused his laboratory research on the effects of microgravity on gene expression in bone and muscle cells in outer space.

 

"What I enjoy most about spinal surgery is the opportunity to combine science and art to help patients rehab from physically debilitating conditions," says Dr. Lee, according to the Hoag Orthopedic Institute website.

 

Dr. Lee earned his medical degree with distinction from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and a spine surgery fellowship in Harvard Medical School in Boston.
