Kee Kim, MD, is the chief of spinal neurosurgery at the University of California Davis Health System. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon with an expertise in dealing with challenging spinal disorders. He has experience in complex spine surgery, including tumor, infection, degenerative spine and trauma. Dr. Kim is a leader in computer-assisted spine surgery, minimally invasive surgery and spinal instrumentation. He is the co-director of the UC Davis Spine Center and works with clinical trials as a primary investigator.
His research is primarily clinical. In 2011 he and Rudolph Shrot, MD, performed a new stem cell therapy procedure from Mesoblast technology to promote bone tissue growth after the removal of cervical discs. The surgery used bone marrow-derived adult stem cells as part of a nationwide, multicenter clinical trial of the therapy. The first procedure in the trial was performed in anterior cervical discectomy. The stem cells were derived from a donor's bone marrow and grown in culture to a high concentration.
Though Dr. Kim performs much clinical research, he is also involved in studying peridural fibrosis and spinal cord regeneration.
He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed additional studies in surgery and neurological surgery at UC Davis Medical Center, as well as spinal surgery at the University of California Los Angeles.
Dr. Kim is a member of many organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association, National Neurotrauma Society, North American Spine Society and International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, formerly Spine Arthroplasty Society.
