Spine Leader to Know: Dr. Richard Guyer of Texas Back Institute

Richard D. Guyer, MD, is a spinal surgeon is a founding partner of Texas Back Institute in Plano , which opened in 1982. Dr. Guyer is founder and chairman of the Texas Back Institute Research Foundation, a nonprofit that does clinical studies on discographies, MRIs, minimally invasive procedures and total disc replacement and publishes peer-reviewed medical literature, as well as spine-related textbooks. In addition, Dr. Guyer is the Texas Back Institute Spine Fellowship Program director.

"My treatment philosophy is to treat my patients the way I would want myself or my family members to be treated," Dr. Guyer says. "I always utilize what I like to refer to as the 'family test' when advising treatment and surgical options for my patients."

From 2006 to 2007, Dr. Guyer served as president of the North American Spine Society. He also serves as an editorial board member for Spine and The Spine Journal and won the Volvo Award in Low Back Pain Research.

Dr. Guyer is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and was a spine fellow at Case Western University in Cleveland, and then studied under Leon Wiltse, MD, in Long Beach, Calif., before moving to Texas to put his energy behind the Texas Back Institute.
