Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Ian Armstrong of Southern California Spine Institute

Ian I.T. Armstrong, MD, is the medical director of Los Angeles-based Southern California Spine Institute. He is also an attending staff neurosurgeon at Center for Ambulatory Surgery and Treatment in Westwood, Calif.; Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles; and St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

Dr. Armstrong is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society and Society of Lateral Access Surgeons. He has previously served as the director of the spine program at Century City Hospital and director of the spine program at Midway Hospital, both located in Los Angeles. He is actively involved in humanitarian efforts and following the December 2010 earthquake, he led a medical relief team to Haiti.

 

Dr. Armstrong has a professional interest in minimally invasive spine surgery, neurosurgical trauma, spinal reconstruction and FDA-approved stem cell research and applications. He is an Aurora Spine Scientific Advisory Board member and has also consulted with NuVasive in the development, research, FDA-approved use and patient evaluation studies of numerous products, such as the Osteocel Plus and XLIF.

 

Dr. Armstrong earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he was awarded a research fellowship grant on spinal cord trauma from the National Institutes of Health. He has also completed a spine fellowship with neurological and orthopedic training at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
