Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Bernard Rawlins of Hospital for Special Surgery

Bernard A. Rawlins, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon practicing at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He also serves as a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, also in New York. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He currently serves as the spine consultant for the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Mets baseball team.

Dr. Rawlins' clinical interests include disc surgery, athletic spine injuries, spinal fractures, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, cervical and lumbar herniations and spinal stenosis. He also has a wide range of research interests, such as spine biomechanics, gene-mediated spine fusion and innovative surgical techniques.

 

Dr. Rawlins has won a number of awards, including the Nancy Kane Bischoff Mentor Award from the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New Investigation Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society. He is also interested in furthering spine surgery education, and he regularly travels to West Africa to teach spine surgeons there.

 

Dr. Rawlins earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He completed a spine surgery fellowship at the Minnesota Spine Center in Minneapolis. Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in applied mechanics from the Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science.
