Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Eugene Carragee of Stanford University School of Medicine

Eugene Carragee, MD, is vice chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif. He previously served as director of the orthopedic spine center at Stanford and head of the spinal surgery section in orthopedic surgery department. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society and International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. He has also trained in the US Army Medical Corps, and has served as a battalion and command surgeon and a forward surgical team commander.

Dr. Carragee has a professional interest in spinal reconstructive surgery, cervical and lumbar disc and fusion surgery, spinal tumor and infections and spinal deformities. He also has an active interest in research, and his areas of research include outcomes assessment of surgical and rehabilitative treatment for cervical and lumbar intervertebral disk herniation; diagnosis and treatment of spine infections, instrumentation of the degenerative spine and spinal deformities; and low back pain syndromes, pain and pain management.

 

Dr. Carragee has won numerous awards, including Volvo Clinical Research Award from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award from Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the editor-in-chief of The Spine Journal, the official journal of the North American Spine Society. He is also participating in the Neck Pain Task Force, an international project.

 

Dr. Carragee earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He has also completed a spine and pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at the University of Hong Kong in China.
