Spine Leaders

Barton L. Sachs, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon who serves as chief administrative office and chief of staff to the CEO at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is also a professor of orthopedics at MUSC, where he also serves as chair of the Clinical Documentation Initiative Committee and Workflow Implementation Committee for EPIC Outpatient Electronic Health Record. He is a member of International Society for Study of Lumbar Spine, AO Spine North America and Cervical Spine Research Society.

Dr. Sachs is board-certified, and his research interests include minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques as well as advancing the development and application of spinal arthroplasty. He has previously served as consultant to the Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Devices Panel at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Spinal Disorders. Over the course of his career, Dr. Sachs has won numerous awards, including Best Poster Presentation at the North American Spine Society annual meeting and the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award for CME.

"I think that some of the most challenging issues for spine surgeons arise from working in a dramatically changing industry. This creates an unsteady and insecure work environment," says Dr. Sachs. "We are being asked to provide greater access to care but, at the same time, we want to advance quality and maintain or reduce the cost of care. The area of spine care has included many advances, especially in understanding spine disease. I can think of around half a dozen major technological advantages in spine care which include disruptive technology, such as: fusing the spine with pedicle screw implants, the use of bone stimulant biologic materials and motion-preserving technologies. We have to understand that the best care for patients will come from being able to work collaboratively and focus service for the patient. Spine specialists need to understand that patients will do best if we collaborate with the non-operative staff, rehabilitative specialists and nursing staff. We have to continue to look for new systems, new techniques and new ways of providing care, but the focus has to be on outcomes."

Dr. Sachs earned his medical degree at State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland. He also completed the John H. Moe Scoliosis Fellowship at Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis.
