Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Rex Marco of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston

Rex Marco, MD, is a professor in the orthopedic surgery department at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he is also the chief of spine surgery and musculoskeletal oncology. He is also the co-director of the spine service at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Houston. He serves as the volunteer team physician for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams, and is a member of the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society and Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.

Dr. Marco is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His areas of expertise include adult and pediatric spinal deformities and disorders, tumors of the spinal column and extremities, adult degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, scoliosis, spine trauma and sarcoma. He is active in clinical research and is credited with more than 130 presentations and medical journal and textbook publications.

 

Dr. Marco began his career as a spine surgeon and musculoskeletal oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He actively participates in community activities and is the Westbury Little League team manager. He has participated in medical mission trips including a trip to Haiti in 2010 as well as a trip to Palestine with the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund in 2012.

 

Dr. Marco earned his medical degree at from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency training at The University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He has completed two fellowships — one in musculoskeletal oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and another in spine surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
