William F. Donaldson, MD, is chief of the orthopedic spine service and vice chairman for administrative service in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is also a professor of orthopedic surgery and neurological surgery. He is provides care at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Montefiore and UPMC St. Margaret, all located in Pittsburgh. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Cervical Spine Research Society and International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine.
Dr. Donaldson is board-certified and has a professional interest in cervical herniated discs, cervical spine diseases, lumbar degenerative disc disease and scoliosis. He is also involved in research in spinal biomechanics and spinal anatomy. He has published numerous papers and presented at national and international spine meetings. He has been on the program committee for Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spine section.
"The exciting horizon that spine offers us through innovation from basic science and biomechanics will allow us to improve our outcomes to our patients," says Dr. Donaldson. "We are extending our understanding of the spine through our biodynamics laboratory and in vivo testing of our patients. This will allow us to develop an anatomic model based on our actual patient's motion and anatomy through dual fluoroscopic and CT reconstruction. This potentially could lead to more accurate future spinal implant development."
Dr. Donaldson earned his medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell/Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he also completed a fellowship.
