Steven C. Ludwig, MD, is chief of spine surgery and a professor in the department of orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also serves as director of the spine fellowship and the medical director of the Texas Station site of University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a founding member of the Maryland Spine Society. He is also a member of the North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.
Dr. Ludwig is board-certified and his clinical interests include adult reconstructive spine surgery, degenerative spine diseases, disc herniation and replacement, spinal stenosis, spinal tumors and traumatic injuries to the cervical spine. He is the NFL spine team physician for Baltimore Ravens and is also the editor of the Journal of Contemporary Spine Surgery. Over the course of his career, Dr. Ludwig has won numerous awards, including a first place award for minimally invasive spine techniques in cervical spine fixation from the American College of Spine Surgeons in 2010.
"I chose spine surgery because of the influence of my mentors at Jefferson," says Dr. Ludwig. "I was fascinated by the act of taking folks who were severely debilitated, choosing an operation based on their symptoms and imaging studies, performing surgery on their spine and seeing the huge difference that it made to their quality of life. What really drives me as an academic spine surgeon is casting forward what my mentors taught me. Watching residents complete their training gives me a lot of satisfaction."
Dr. Ludwig earned his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Piscataway. He has completed a combined Thomas Jefferson University-Rothman Institute residency in orthopedic surgery in Philadelphia as well as a fellowship in spine surgery at Emory University in Atlanta.
