Raj Rao, MD, is the director of spine surgery and professor of orthopedic surgery in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a member of the board of directors of the North American Spine Society. He was recently appointed to the FDA Advisory Panel on Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices.
Dr. Rao specializes in spine surgery, spinal tumors, spine trauma, spinal deformity and surgical management of neck and back disorders. His research interests include spinal biomechanics, spinal fusion and gait analysis in persons with spinal disorders.
"The most fulfilling aspect of my career, without question, is seeing grateful and happy patients return to the office following surgery," said Dr. Rao in a Becker's Spine Review article. "Knowing that we've improved their quality of life and returned them to an activity level they thought was lost forever is quite thrilling. Each happy patient is the product of many years of years of training, hard work and evolving thought process and skill, and it's nice to see these efforts paying off."
Dr. Rao earned his medical degree at the University of Bombay in India. He completed his residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a fellowship in spine surgery at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.
