David Hanscom, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle and is a member of Swedish Neuroscience Specialists with eight other surgical partners. He is the founder of the "DOCC" project which stands for "Defined, Organized, Comprehensive, Care." It is a structured protocol for relieving chronic pain. He is also author of "Back in Control: A Spine Surgeon's Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain."
Dr. Hanscom specializes in complex spine problems in all areas of the spine and has expertise in adult and pediatric spine deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis. His clinical interests also includes neck injuries, sciatica and disc problems. A significant part of his practice is performing surgery on patients who have had prior spine surgeries.

"My personal goal to give patients the tools to treat chronic pain themselves," said Dr. Hanscom in a Becker's Spine Review article, "Even if surgery is required the soft tissues and nervous system must be addressed. Then I want to give them the knowledge to make surgeons accountable to them. I still do a lot of surgery because surgery works well for structural problems, but my biggest plea to surgeons is to quit doing surgery on non-structural processes."

Dr. Hanscom earned his medical degree from Loma Linda (Calif.) University. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, Wash., and orthopedic residency at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He has also completed a spinal deformity fellowship at Twin Cities Scoliosis Center in Minneapolis.
