Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Burak Ozgur of DISC Sports and Spine Center

Burak Ozgur, MD, is the chief of the neurosurgery spine service at Hoag Hospital and director of the DISC Sports and Spine Center in Newport Beach, Calif. He previously served as director of minimally invasive spine surgery and an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and director of spinal neurosurgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ozgur is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Society of Lateral Access Surgery and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has served time on the UCI Publications Editorial Board as well.

Throughout his career Dr. Ozgur has also been engaged in research related to spine surgery and published articles in professional medical journals. Most recently, he published on the risks, pitfalls and complications of the lateral lumbar approach.

Dr. Ozgur earned his medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. His additional training includes fellowships in orthopedic spine surgery and neurospine surgery at the University of California San Diego Medical Center.
