The trial for Dewey C. MacKay, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who is accused of prescribing 3.5 million painkillers over a four year period, is set to begin soon, according to a Cache Valley Daily report.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Dr. MacKay dispensed among the highest amount of pain medication in Utah. An order for the suspension of registration to dispense controlled substances was filed in Feb. 2009.
Michael H. Sumko, MD, was one of the physicians who reported concerns about the amount of painkillers Dr. MacKay was prescribing to authorities. Defense attorneys tried to discredit his testimony due to an incident where he allegedly displayed a patient's amputated finger at a hospital luncheon, according to the report.
The judge in the case denied the defense's request, and the trial will proceed.
