A retired army veteran in Ohio was one of the first in the nation to receive an implant that uses motion-sensor technology to relieve chronic pain, according to a Youngstown Vindicator report.
The patient, who experienced spinal nerve damage following surgery to repair herniated discs, received the Medtronic AdaptiveStim with RestoreSensor neurostimulation implant in his back in December. Wires from the device connected to the spinal cord to block pain signals to the brain, and the device provided pain relief by automatically adjusting stimulation levels to the needs of the patient.
The patient's pain medication use decreased by 50 percent in the next three months following the surgery.
