The American College of Radiology has published evidence-based guidelines developed by radiologists at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta for the diagnosis and treatment of low back pain, according to a News Medical report. The guidelines were published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology and detail a process for working with low back pain patients. The guidelines recommend steps for the initial visit and categorizing patients based on their pain to assist them with appropriate treatment.
The guidelines were designed to assist physicians in clinical decision making and decrease inappropriate imaging utilization, steroid use and invasive procedures.
