The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be the lead research site for a five year, $16 million research program to assess risk factors and genetic markers for chronic pain conditions, according to a Dentistry IQ report. The Orofacial Pain Prospective Evaluation and Risk Assessment II will follow up with 3,200 patients from the OPPERA I program and enroll 3,000 new patients to understand conditions such as jaw-related disorders, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and lower back pain.
Researchers will assess the patients' behaviors, genetic factors and other biological mechanisms that could contribute to chronic pain conditions, according to the report.
