A study recently published in Spine shows that the supply and utilization of chiropractors among the older adult population could be connected. Researchers analyzed Medicare claims for chiropractic physicians in 2008 and found:
• Average regional supply of chiropractic physicians was 21.5 per 100,000 adult capita
• 7.6 percent of Medicare beneficiaries used chiropractic care
• Chiropractic supply and use were positively correlated
• Low back and cervical spine problems were strongly associated with chiropractic use
• Increased chiropractic supply was not associated with increased chiropractic utilization intensity
