Is this US city a new home for Canadian orthopedic surgeons?

Orthopedic

Arizona is the hot spot for Canadians with more than 350 Canadian companies and 1.1 million visitors. And now Canadian physicians are looking to provide healthcare services to their countrymen in the states, according to Your West Valley.

With the help of telehealth companies and existing infrastructure, Canadian physicians are looking to provide Surprise, Ariz., residents' orthopedic surgery services.

Here's what you need to know.

1. Kealey & Associates in Toronto and Surprise Economic Development Director Jeanine Jerkovic are working to provide Canadian Surprise residents with Canadian healthcare services.

2. Because healthcare in Canada is privately funded, physicians often can only work a few days a week or perform a limited amount of procedures.

3. In Ontario, 30,000 residents are waiting for hip or knee replacements. Part of the reason for this is because physicians recommend foregoing joint replacement surgery during the winter.

4. A decision on whether Canadian physicians can practice in Surprise is expected in the winter of 2017 and if approved the program could start in 2018.

5. Costs of orthopedic surgery would be consistent care paid for in Canada and there is already a telehealth organization, MD24, in Surprise to connect patients in with physicians during rehabilitation.
