OrthoIndy performs 1st meniscus replacement surgery: 5 things to know

Jack Farr, MD, of OrthoIndy in Indianapolis, performed the center's first meniscus replacement procedure using the VENUS NUsurface Meniscus Implant.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. OrthoIndy is the only center in the state participating in the VENUS clinical trial, which enrolls patients with knee pain after loss of meniscus cartilage.

 

2. Over one million meniscectomies are performed in the U.S. every year.

 

3. The NUsurface Meniscus Implant is inserted into the knee joint through a small incision and patients typically go home the same day of the operations.

 

4. After the replacement, patients go through six weeks of rehabilitation.

 

5. The VENUS clinical trial has enrolled approximately 130 patients at orthopedic centers in the U.S., Europe and Israel.
